The World Remembers Diana, Zara is Caught Copying, and More

Breaking news, trending stories, industry intel.

This is The S/ List.

1. Today marks the 19th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death.

“She was a global celebrity in the broadest sense, a woman of startling charisma who became famous when she married the heir to the English throne and even more famous when she divorced him and embarked on a life of her own.”

2. Matt Bomer has been cast to play a transgender woman and Twitter is not happy about it.

“The casting of actors in roles that don’t match their identities has long been controversial. For example, a number of movies have been criticized for casting white people as people of color. Most recently, the Tim McNeil film Anything came under fire for casting Matt Bomer, a cisgender man, as a transgender woman.”

3. Zara is under fire for yet another designer knockoff.

“Brother Vellies’ furry sandals have become a signature; retailing for $715, the Dhara style is made of nubuck and fox fur. Zara’s knock-off version? Polyester and synthetic fur, which at $59.90, costs just a fraction of the original.”

4. Spike Jonze directed a perfume commercial and the internet is flipping for it.

“Remember how amazingly bizarre Christopher Walken was in Fatboy Slim’s ‘Weapon of Choice’ music video back in 2001? You can thank Spike Jonze for that.

The American director has once again lent his unique visual taste to fashion house Kenzo, by directing its commercial for a new perfume called ‘Kenzo World.'”

5. Harvard has created the world’s first autonomous soft robot. And it’s an octopus.

“This small, 3D printed robot — nicknamed the ‘Octobot’ — could pave the way for a new generation of such machines. Soft robotics could help revolutionize how humans interact with machines. But researchers have struggled to build entirely compliant robots.”
