The most influential moments in art, literature and fashion are often the most polarizing. Case in point: Boris Pasternak’s 1957 novel, Doctor Zhivago. The Russian Revolution-set love story—which follows the life of a married physician and poet as he navigates his feelings for a new woman—was banned upon its release by the Soviet Union. And yet, despite great opposition, Pasternak received the Nobel Prize for his literary achievements in 1958 (though he declined to accept it). In 1965, Doctor Zhivago descended on Hollywood in a David Lean-directed film, starring actress Julie Christie and the late Omar Sharif. Costume designer Phyllis Dalton won an Oscar for her work on the film, and it’s easy to see why. Dalton’s visionary designs—which included lush fur-trimmed outerwear, elegant hats and luxurious knits—injected an extra dose of romance to the otherwise sombre storyline. The film’s costumes did more than establish a mood in each scene—they made an indelible mark on the fashion world.
