Guillaume Côté’s “Being And Nothingness” is Dynamic Yet Simplistic

“It’s minimally complex,” said choreographer Guillaume Côté of his upcoming premiere for the National Ballet of Canada, Being and Nothingness. Inspired by Jean Paul Sartre’s existential philosophy, the ballet captures the dichotomy between existence and absolute nothingness. “I see it as the darkness justifies the light,” says Côté. “If you see the contrast between complete silence and music, you’ll appreciate the music much more.” The subtle movements of dancer Greta Hodgkinson, the minimal costumes by Krista Dowson and the harmonies of composer Philip Glass all come together to highlight the beauty of simplicity.
