While the Jenner, Hadid, and Baldwin types of the fashion world inundate our feeds, every so often we stumble on lesser-known, but outstanding beauty. In this case, we’re talking about California girl, Achok Majak. The 23-year-old is a newcomer in many respects: new to the scene, but also new in the sense of her look. Her statuesque build, bold bone structure, blazing white smile, and close-cropped ‘do make her impossible to ignore. All of this is to say: get to know her, and get used to her.
S/ magazine: When, where, and how did you get scouted?
Achok Majak: I’ve been scouted [many times] on several different occasions, but once I decided to pursue [modelling], I met my mother agent and started this journey.
S/: What was your first big fashion moment?
AM: [Booking] Alexander Wang’s lookbook. I had just moved to New York, was fresh in a new market, and was both excited and nervous about high fashion. This booking gave me the confidence and understanding that I’m in the right market.
S/: You star in the Balenciaga “Taking It to the Street” F/W 2016 campaign. How was it working with photographer Mark Borthwick as well creative director, Demna Gvasalia?
AM: This question just put a huge smile on my face because you’ve got me thinking about Mark, Demna, and Lotta [Volkova], the stylist. Shooting with them was a creative, fun, artistic, and unreal experience. It was easily one of my most memorable and best shoots.
S/: How do you prepare for fashion week?
AM: I make sure that I am in my best physical and mental shape. I run long distances and do a lot of Bikram yoga. I eat clean, stay hydrated, and make sure that I’m well rested before all of the fashion week madness begins.
S/: What is your go-to off-duty look?
AM: I’m all about comfort with some edge. Denim or a pair of Lululemon pants, a basic or really cool shirt, biker jacket or hoodie, and sneakers.
S/: Who would you love to get photographed by?
AM: I’d love to do a campaign that would shoot somewhere really fun and with a really awesome crew. I want to shoot with Steven Klein again—he’s rad.
S/: What’s on your current playlist?
Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Drake, Justin Timberlake, Fetty Wap, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Marvin Gaye, 311, Ben Harper, Santana, Jay-Z, and some gospel music.
S/: What are your favourite skincare and beauty products right now, and how do you take care of your skin while travelling?
AM: [I stay] moisturized with M.A.C. Studio Moisture Cream, and by using face masks, and I prefer keeping my face makeup-free whenever possible, so I always carry M.A.C. face wipes with me.
